My uncle died of insulin shock "therapy" at Topeka State Hospital on his 19th birthday. He had run away, told my father "Please help me - they're going to kill me!" but was captured and taken back against his will. A week later, he was dead. He tried to tell my father a lot of details about the horrible conditions, but my father could never find anyone who would believe him or take him seriously. I had not seen photos of the place before. Thank you.

My mother work there from the late 60s until they closed. She was a charge nurse on one of the wards. She had the patient's well-being first and foremost in her mind. She was fair and compassionate.
They have tore most of the buildings down although there are a couple still standing. I always thought they should have not tore down Center building and made a museum to mental health out of it. I was driving around in my Ford Model T my mom when she was getting towards the end of her life. I asked her if she wanted Drive by there and look at it. She didn't want to she said they ruined it. They have built a football field and a indoor swimming pool for school district 501 there. On a corner they have build a strip mall with a pizza place and Kwik Shop there. There is also a small Walmart store there now. It should have been left as a park.
