It was this case that brought about stricter protocols in the lab. Duke University has an article about this case for anyone interested. Sounds like Ronald Clyde Tatro killed himself on the 27th anniversary of the 2nd victims murder.

My son in-law is a DNA forensic scientist. He has used his own blood for controls. Very common. It does happen that the caseworkers DNA shows up in cases.

That was never common practice, to my knowledge. They work exclusively with DNA samples collected from crime scenes.
