On the afternoon of January 12, 2022, two women were jogging along the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Ireland. Just ahead of them, they noticed a mountain bike leaning against the bushes along the towpath. As they approached, they could discern a man crouched over a woman in the bushes; she was thrashing her legs in desperation.
