Thad Phillips was asleep on his couch in Baraboo, Wisconsin, on the night of July 29, 1995. In the haze of half-sleep, he suddenly became aware of somebody lifting him. He thought that it was his father taking him to bed, but when he emerged from his daze, he found himself standing outside, with an older teenage boy standing before him.
